About Mass Hardwood

Finding the right AAU program for your child shouldn't feel like a shot in the dark. Mass Hardwood exists because we've been there — standing in a gym, watching a tryout, with no real way to know if this program competes at the right level for your son.

Massachusetts AAU basketball is loaded with talent and programs, but almost no transparency. Dozens of options, tryout after tryout, and no real way to know which one is the right fit. Too serious? Not serious enough? Do they travel to elite tournaments or just local rec events?

We track every tournament, every result, and every bracket across Massachusetts so you can see — not just hear — how each program competes. Our rankings reflect bracket level and tournament quality, so you know whether a program is competing at the beginner, mid-tier, or elite level before you commit.

We want to be the resource we wished existed.

How Our Rankings Work
Transparency in how we rate programs
01
We track tournament results
Every game from every tournament we cover gets logged — scores, matchups, rounds, and which bracket level it was played in. The bracket tells us how competitive the tournament field was.
02
We calculate wins, losses & point differential
A win at the American bracket is worth more than a win at the Universal bracket. Point differential is also factored in, but capped at 20 points per game — we don't want a 60-point blowout to inflate rankings unfairly.
03
We weigh bracket level
A team consistently competing at the National bracket will rank higher than a team with the same record at the Universal bracket. The level of competition you seek out matters.
04
Tournament wins count extra
Winning a championship — not just making a run — is recognized in our formula. Teams that close out tournaments demonstrate a different level of consistency.

Understanding Bracket Levels

AAU tournaments are organized into four competitive tiers. A program's bracket history is the single clearest signal of where they compete and what level of commitment they expect.

American
Elite

The highest level of AAU competition. Programs in the American bracket are competing for national rankings and championships. These teams travel extensively, hold rigorous tryouts, and expect a significant time commitment from players and families.

e.g. National title contenders, top-tier travel programs
National
Advanced

Highly competitive programs playing in strong regional and national circuits. Teams at this level take basketball seriously and compete against the best programs in the Northeast. Strong fundamentals and consistent development are expected.

e.g. Strong regional programs, competitive travel teams
International
Intermediate

A solid mid-tier level where teams are developing competitively. Players are getting meaningful reps against quality competition without the extreme commitment of the top brackets. Great for players who love the game and want to get better.

e.g. Mid-level travel programs, developing competitive teams
Universal
Beginner / Recreational

Entry-level tournament basketball. Ideal for younger players getting their first AAU experience, or programs focused on fundamentals and fun over results. Great for families testing the waters before committing to a higher-level program.

e.g. Beginner programs, younger age groups, recreational travel
